The Kentucky state legislature formally censured Supreme Court Justice Kelly Thompson of Bowling Green. Thompson and the state Supreme Court ruled that the legislature cannot impeach a Lexington judge. The legislature said “Justice Thompson’s statements are intemperate remarks that threaten the constitutional rights of members of the General Assembly, attorneys providing legal counsel to the General Assembly, and others with professional discipline and criminal prosecution.” Thompson defended his judicial opinion and said he was “honored to get under Pres. Stivers skin.” Thompson is right that “to remove an elected official is very serious business”. The wrangling between the two branches underscores the checks and balances in our system of government. How this plays out remains to be seen.
