The U.S. Constitution bans religious tests in order to hold public office. Article VI says "…no religious Test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States." Yet U.S. Senators are crossing a line that violates this rule. Sen. Diane Feinstein criticized judicial nominee Amy Coney Barrett for her devout Catholic beliefs. Sen. Dick Durbin asked her if she's an "orthodox Catholic." Sen. Al Franken compared Barrett’s speaking before a group of Christian lawers (Alliance Defending Freedom) to giving a speech to Pol Pot, the genocidal Cambodian dictator. In June, Bernie Sanders questioned an [executive branch] another nominee's religious belief. He repeatedly and angrily asked [Russell Vought]:"Do you think that people who are not Christians are condemned?" These questions cross the line and these Senators need to be reminded that religious tests imposed by them violate the Constitution.
