A Fayette County school board member is suing to stop Senate Bill 4 which is a new state law that would cost him his seat on the board. The law prohibits teachers in Kentucky school districts from serving on the school boards of Fayette and Jefferson counties. Fayette School Board Chair Tyler Murphy is employed by Fayette County Schools. The bill is intended to help prevent conflicts of interest. And the revamp comes amid broader concerns about accountability, governance, and financial oversight in some of Kentucky’s largest school districts. Opponents, however, argue the law unfairly restricts who voters can elect to represent them. The lawsuit will now move through the courts, which will ultimately decide whether the reforms take effect.
