We value free speech in this nation so much that we've made it a priority and protected it in the First Amendment of the Constitution. So it's ironic that one of the institutions that benefits the greatest is the place where free speech is most under attack. I'm talking about universities. Many schools offer "safe spaces" which are places for students to go in order to escape potentially offensive speech. Others have designated speech zones where controversial speech is limited to. Left-leaning speech is welcomed on campus while conservative speech is often restricted and shut out. In response, the Kentucky Senate passed a bill that would ensure the free speech rights of students and faculty at our state universities. It may take a while for this to sink in, but maybe someday our universities will appreciate the legal protections of free speech for all.
