A federal court recently sentenced the man convicted of attempting to assassinate Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh to just over eight years. This decision drew sharp criticism from across the nation. According to reports, the defendant claimed to be a woman trapped in a man’s body. And because of their transgender identity the judge was lenient during sentencing proceedings. The judge reasoned that prison time will be tougher in an all male prison context. This sends a terrible message when it comes to justice. Justice must be blind to ideology or identity. When transgender status becomes a factor in sentencing a would be assassin of a Supreme Court justice, the rule of law takes a blow and we are entering dangerous territory as a society.
