A controversial drag show in Owensboro is back in the news. County leaders are considering whether public funds should go to the RiverPark Center in downtown Owensboro where the monthly drag show is being hosted. Riverpark currently receives $12,000 from the county, but Judge-Executive Charlie Castlen said, “When they have created something as divisive as it’s been in our community, and they readily admit they’re losing money on it, and yet they keep doing it, it’s almost as though they’re saying, ‘We don’t need your money.’” Judge Castlen and county leaders are stewards of public tax dollars, but they’re also a steward of a moral compass, and their decision on funding Riverpark will tell us a lot about their vision for public virtue, community flourishing, and appropriate entertainment in a public place.
