Westport Middle School in Louisville announced an opportunity for students to meet legislators and a gay rights activist. The purpose was to teach them how to write letters to their legislators, but the intent was controversial. The activity comes in the wake of legislation that keeps sex ideology out of the classroom. And it was led by the leader of the Kentucky Fairness campaign, the largest LGBT rights organization in Kentucky. The bill they were opposed to requires schools to get permission from parents before sex-ed is taught. Perhaps legislators need to go back to the drawing board next legislative session and craft legislation that would require schools to stick to teaching reading, writing, math, and history and keep politicization out of the classroom as well.
