California passed a law in 2013 prohibiting public school employees from informing parents of a child’s gender dysphoria or identity change, that is unless they have the child’s consent. A similar policy is in place in the Madison, Wisconsin school district but parents there are fighting back through the courts. Fourteen parents filed a lawsuit against the local school district because their student transgender policy violates their parental rights. The Madison policy orders faculty to refer to students by their chosen names and pronouns but then it tells them to revert to the children’s legal names and pronouns when with parents. In other words, the policy is purposely deceiving parents. The district adopted the policy in April 2018 without a school board vote or a public hearing.
