In 2017, a bill passed the legislature that allowed teaching the Bible as an elective course. It’s been argued that the Bible is the single most influential book upon Western civilization. And in order for young people to understand our foundations, they must understand the history, poetry and literature of the Bible. So many phrases and common sayings have Biblical origins: a city set on a hill, a Jezebel, Job’s friends, and David and Goliath. The goal of the elective course isn’t to convert public school students to the Christian faith, but rather to educate them about the many lessons of the Bible. McCracken, Barren, and Letcher counties offer such Bible courses. Anderson County High School site-based council recently turned it down and will offer a “world religions” course instead.
