Seattle’s “Capitol Hill Occupied Protest” zone where protesters camped out and drove out the police, is over. Seattle police moved out protestors after two fatal shootings, several robberies, assaults, and property crimes were reported. According to Seattle Police Chief Carmen Best, “what’s happened on these streets… is lawless and its brutal and bottom line it is simply unacceptable.” The freedom to assemble and protest is a protected First Amendment right. But occupying public areas and resorting to lawlessness is not. Seattle leadership failed its citizens by allowing a mob to rule its streets for so long. But maybe they did the rest of us a favor by giving us a snapshot as to why law and order and the police are integral to any safe and healthy society.
