Today is Memorial Day, the day we set aside to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country. Memorial Day began just after the Civil War ended, and our nation began the healing process from the bloodiest war in history that left some 600,000 dead. We also remember the soldiers who died in all our wars, from the Revolution to Afghanistan. Scripture tells us that “No greater love hath a man than he lay his life down for a friend.” This is true of the American patriot who lays down his life for his countrymen. Their willingness to serve, their courage, and their sacrifice make it possible for us to sleep safely at night knowing that we are protected. And for those who made the ultimate sacrifice, we are truly grateful.
