In the Gettysburg Address, Abraham Lincoln reminded us that we have a "government of the people, by the people, for the people." It was a reminder that the people are the ones in charge of the government instead of the government being in charge of the people. This truth came to light the other day after the Somerset City Council passed the first reading of an ordinance that would have afforded civil rights status to what many believe to be immoral behavior. When local citizens learned about this they came to the next city council meeting in droves. Over 300 attended and most were in opposition to the proposed ordinance. According to one city leader, it was the most they've ever had attend a city council meeting. The issue may not be finished but local officials got the message that this is the people's government.
