The Biden Administration proposed to give the World Health Organization (WHO) increased authority. But 24 of our nation’s governors strongly opposed the idea. The governors said that, “If adopted, these agreements would seek to elevate the WHO from an advisory body to a global authority in public health.… [These] proposals could erode state sovereignty … stripping elected representatives of their role in setting public health policies and compelling citizens to comply with WHO directives.” Giving a global organization power over our nation’s healthcare policy is both inappropriate and dangerous. Our nation’s public health decisions should be made within our nation’s borders. These governors are standing up for American sovereignty and our best interests.
