A proposed law to make Louisville a “trans safe haven”  failed after losing support from some of the very organizations that originally supported the idea. The ordinance was rejected in committee following opposition from groups including the ACLU, the Fairness Campaign, and United Way, which argued the measure did not go far enough in protecting transgender individuals. Meanwhile, other organizations raised concerns that parts of the proposal could conflict with Kentucky laws protecting religious liberty and conscience rights. While supporters and critics disagreed on nearly everything else, both concluded the ordinance was flawed and should not be passed. One thing missing in this debate is the idea that respecting the dignity of all people doesn’t necessarily mean that certain behaviors should be protected in law.
