Commonwealth Policy Center

Two years ago, the state of Kentucky banned DEI policies in higher education. But a recent undercover investigation by Accuracy in Media found that Western Kentucky University is defying the law. Undercover footage shows staff at WKU admitting they still have DEI policies but are using different words.  One staffer, caught on camera, bluntly said, “We can’t actually use those words because, you know, people are dumb.” They confirm that by avoiding certain words, they can still teach DEI content, which ultimately discriminates based on external characteristics like race or gender. DEI undermines merits, the idea that if you work hard and play by the rules you can work your way up in our society. And this is the ideal that our university should be teaching.
