An employee at the University of Louisville posted a Charlie Kirk quote about gun violence being “worth it” to protect the Second Amendment—now a GOP legislator is calling for her termination. Some argue this is cancel culture. This isn’t just about speech we dislike; it’s about who gets to decide what crosses the line. Free institutions like universities must guard against rash punishments that silence dissent rather than encourage debate. At the same time, universities serve the public and its employees must abide by a higher standard of conduct. Free speech is a core value for all Americans and we must all work to protect it and when its abused by public employees who’d justify the heinous murder of another, they must realize there are consequences.
