The ugly comments on social media, following Charlie Kirk’s assassination last week are resulting in job terminations. The political left is saying that the conservatives are engaging in cancel culture. But is this true? Ugly speech is protected by the First Amendment. But it does not mean that you can say anything you want without consequence. Kirk was an influential conservative who engaged opponents with civility and grace. And his death impacted many deeply. To celebrate his death was inhumane, offensive, and ugly and resulted in many being fired. Consider that there are certain jobs that require high level of civility and public trust: judges, teachers, and college professors—all serve the public. And we’re finding that inhumane and ugly rants have consequence.
