U.S. Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA) recently denounced the idea that our rights come from God. He argued that believing this is akin to what the Iranians believe and imposing it by Sharia law. Kaine says our rights come from government. But the problem with this is that if government gives rights, then government can just as easily take them away. Our Founders knew better. The Declaration of Independence makes it clear: we are “endowed by our Creator with certain unalienable Rights.” Government’s role isn’t to create freedom but to secure the rights God has already given. That’s what the Declaration says. Kaine’s view flips that truth on its head. When rights are reduced to government privileges, they become fragile and temporary. But when they come from God, they are firm, enduring, and worth defending.
