A recent survey from The Associated Press finds that a majority of Americans favor religious chaplains in public schools. About 6 in 10 adults say that chaplains should be allowed to provide religious services for students in public schools. However, much less think that teacher-led prayer is appropriate in a classroom setting. Religion in public schools has been debated for decades and  recent controversies over the display of the Ten Commandments, moment of silence laws, and even the funding of religious charter schools reminds us the sharp divide in public opinion.  But in the case of public support of chaplains, the public sees this not as mandatory, but as a personal resource of moral support to religious students and their families who want it.
