The U.S. Supreme Court recently sided with parents who tried to opt their children out of controversial LGBTQ+ curriculum in a Maryland public school. The Court ruled that children to shouldn’t be forced to participate in instruction that violates the families’ religious beliefs. And there’s a long history of legal precedent that supports religious freedom and the right of parents to direct the religious instruction of their children. Some complain this ruling is simply about evangelical Christian concerns. However  those who brought the lawsuit come from a variety of traditions: Muslim, Roman Catholic and Ukrainian Orthodox—a reminder of the moral teachings extend across faith traditions. The Court made clear in this case that the family, not government, is pre-eminent in society.
