The Trump administration is suing the state of Kentucky to overturn a policy that gives in-state tuition to illegal immigrants. The Department of Justice is arguing that the policy by the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education (CPE) violates federal immigration law, while American students pay higher tuition to attend the same schools. Proponents of the policy insist that these underprivileged students deserve a shot at the American dream-and that CPE has the right to supply that chance. A spokesperson for Governor Beshear said that CPE is independent and the has sole authority to determine student residency requirements for the purposes of in-state tuition. Regardless, the Justice Department is arguing that illegal entry shouldn’t be rewarded and that Americans shouldn’t pay higher college tuition.
