The Louisiana state Supreme Court ruled back in March that historical horse racing is illegal. As a result, Churchill Downs announced it’s shutting down the Fair Grounds Race Course in New Orleans, which is one of the oldest racetracks in the U.S. Churchill said they cannot justify horse racing without the slot machines. Interestingly on Tuesday, the Southern Baptist Convention passed a resolution calling the gambling industry “predatory” and “harmful”. They called upon the government to restrict gambling. This is because gambling creates more losers than winners. In the case of Churchill Downs, it’s all about the bottom line. But one thing that’s forgotten is that the bottom line comes from the pockets of people often those who can least afford it.
