The Democratic National Convention began yesterday in Chicago, as delegates will gather to nominate Kamala Harris and Tim Walz for President and Vice President. There are shades from another Democratic convention in Chicago: 1968. Back then, there was civil unrest, war abroad, and radical elements within the Democratic Party that resorted to violence. The 60s were the time when the Democratic Party moved from a pro-family and blue collar party to being heavily influenced by radical activists. It can be said that the party has radicalized since then. Concerns over violence loom over this year’s convention, particularly from anti-Semitic protestors who’ve threatened to disrupt proceedings. Chicago’s police Superintendent warned them saying, “We’re not going to allow you to riot.” Hopefully this year’s DNC will be peaceful.
