Mississippi’s Solicitor General Scott Stewart tried to persuade the U.S. Supreme Court to uphold his state’s abortion restrictions. He said Roe v Wade “haunt[s] our country” and “[has] no basis in the Constitution.” Stewart is defending a Mississippi law that restricts abortions after 15 weeks. And court watchers believe this is a major case that could undo abortion on demand. Justice Brett Kavanaugh asked, “Why should this court be the arbiter rather than Congress, the state legislatures, state supreme courts, the people being able to resolve this?” Kavanaugh continued, “We’re running on 50 years of Roe. It is an egregiously wrong decision that has inflicted tremendous damage on our country and will continue to do so and take innumerable human lives unless and until this court overrules it.”
