The conservative college watchdog organization Campus Reform brings attention to what’s going on at our institutions of higher learning, particularly when it comes to wasteful spending, questionable course offerings, or unfair treatment in the classroom. They recently reported that University of Kansas offered a course last fall called “Angry White Male Studies” (Humanities 365). The course description says it will explore “the deeper sources of this emotional state while evaluating recent manifestations of male anger” in Europe and America from 1950 to present. It will also explore the role of “dominant and subordinate masculinities” as they connect to “rights-based movements of women, people of color, homosexuals and trans individuals.” The course is generating controversy but it’s now up to KU to justify the value and importance of teaching such a perspective.
