Former President Trump’s recent statement opposing federal legislation that would restrict abortion drew condemnation from leading pro-life organizations including the Susan B. Anthony List.  While Trump took credit for the overturning of Roe v. Wade, he also went on record supporting rape and incest exceptions for abortion bans. His suggestion that Republicans must moderate their pro-life positions to win elections is fracturing an important part of the Republican base. For many Republican voters, the right to life isn’t a political chip, but it’s a non-negotiable principle; every American deserves equal protection under the law. And Trump’s strategy may backfire, regardless of how politically palatable it may be to a large number of voters.
