The framers of the U.S. Constitution set up an electoral college system to elect the President. The electoral college ensures that every state plays an important role and isn’t neglected in national politics. But Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear is calling for the electoral college to be abolished, saying that it’s unfair and undemocratic. The electoral college is what preserves fairness. Presidents are forced to campaign in states like Wisconsin, Michigan, and Georgia. If the presidency were decided by popular vote, larger states like New York and California would control it. Kentucky, which has only eight electoral college votes, benefits from a system that values every state. The electoral college prevents regional factions and makes sure that states aren’t overlooked and that the vote of every American matters.
