As American culture embraces secularism, it brings conflict between church and state. This includes secular accrediting agencies for higher education and Christian universities. One university that is now on accreditation probation is Southwest Baptist University. The accrediting agency finds that their traditional use of a statement of faith erodes academic freedom. A professor filed a complaint that he was denied tenure because his views on homosexuality are contrary to the statement of faith. But isn’t the purpose of a statement of faith to ensure all professors teach according to the beliefs of the school? This is a clear violation of religious liberty. Every Christian school should now carefully consider the principles they won’t compromise because they may face a similar fight in the future.
