Political scientist Charles Murray has come to the conclusion that America needs a religious awakening. Murray is the author of the Bell Curve and other popular works assessing our culture. He said in a recent radio interview that “You cannot have a free society, a society that allows lots of individual autonomy without some outside force that leads people to control the self.” Murray gave a harsh assessment of America when he said “The American way of life… is meaningless.” Murray referenced the Founding Fathers who understood that sound moral character is necessary for a free society. Moral development is an unseen ingredient for freedom and proper boundaries of behavior must be agreed upon in order for civilization to thrive. This comes from religious teaching which is a prerequisite for the American experiment.
