President Trump’s recent comment about upholding the Constitution drew a swift response across the political spectrum. In an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Kristen Welker asked the President if he needed to uphold the Constitution with regard to the mass deportation of illegal immigrants. The President responded with uncertainty, saying “I don’t know.” However, he went on to say that he has brilliant lawyers that are going to follow what the Supreme Court said. Though the President’s response is alarming at first glance, his comments in context make his true meaning clear. The “gotcha” headlines from legacy media outlets fall short. While we should all be concerned about our leaders upholding the Constitution, we should insist that media outlets also report the truth, in context.
