Sheriffs in the state of Oregon are refusing to enforce a new gun law. Measure 114 requires gun owners to get permits from law enforcement and attend safety training to purchase firearms. The measure also prohibits magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds of ammunition, which is what the sheriffs are mostly upset over. Union County Sheriff Cody Bowen said in a Facebook post, “When it comes to our constitutional rights, I’ll fight to the death to defend them. No matter what crazy law comes out of Salem!” In a day when mass shootings seem common, it’s understandable why stricter gun laws are being pushed. But any law passed must recognize that our governing document sees gun ownership as a right, not a privilege to be qualified.
