The founder of the Oath Keepers was convicted of seditious conspiracy for his involvement in the January 6 insurrection on the U.S. Capitol. Stewart Rhodes faces 20 years in prison for plotting to block the certification of the 2020 presidential election. Even though Rhodes didn’t enter the Capitol, months of emails, text messages, and correspondence to his supporters indicated he was willing to do anything to impede the certification, even to the point of bloodshed. Steven M. D’Antuono, assistant director in charge of the FBI Washington Field Office, said, “Democracy depends on the peaceful transfer of power. By attempting to block the certification of the 2020 presidential election results, the defendants flouted and trampled the rule of law. This case shows that force and violence are no match for our country’s justice system.”
