NPR editor Uri Berliner exposed the lack of any political diversity within the network. Berliner reported the political imbalance of the editorial staff, which is comprised of 87 Democrats…and 0 Republicans. He made the case that the party affiliation had an impact on reporting. And in turn led to fewer conservative listeners tuning into NPR. As a result of the report, Berliner was suspended without pay. Mainstream media outlets, especially those with public funding like NPR, claim to present factual news to all Americans. But it’s clear that partisan loyalty has clouded their coverage. Only 10 percent of self-identified conservatives tune into NPR, precisely because they’re looking for news grounded in facts without bias. If news outlets like NPR want to regain America’s trust, it should commit to viewpoint diversity.
