The Republican National Committee censured two House Republicans for participating in a House panel committee investigating the January 6, 2021 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. The RNC also characterized the attack as “Democratic led persecution of ordinary citizen who engaged in legitimate politic discourse that had nothing to do with violence at the Capitol.” Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell strongly disagreed and criticized the RNC for their statement. McConnell said, “We all were here. We saw what happened. It was a violent insurrection for the purpose of trying to prevent the peaceful transfer of power after a legitimately certified election from one administration to the next.” McConnell and other Republicans concerned about the RNC downplaying the January 6 insurrection see it as foolish. It’s also harmful to the Republican cause of winning back Congress in the mid-term elections.
