Illegal immigration at the southern border continues to spiral out of control. In the month of May 240,000 illegal immigrants were arrested, the highest monthly total on record. So why be concerned? Victor Davis Hansen says that a country must maintain its borders if it is to remain a nation. A nation is a defined space where the inhabitants share core ideals. When that space isn’t maintained, and when the inhabitants no longer share common ideals, it ceases to be a country. An insecure border and lax immigration standards are two of the greatest threats to our nation. We are a nation of immigrants and should continue to welcome immigrants. But newcomers should get in line and come here legally, and they should adopt American principles and assimilate to American culture.
