The Louisville Metro Council is considering an ordinance that would create a buffer zone around EMW Women’s Clinic in downtown Louisville. The idea is to keep pro-life sidewalk counselors away from women who are seeking an abortion. The problem is that such measures have been struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court. In other words the measure is likely unconstitutional. Louisville Metro councilman Robin Engel said he’s “standing on the side of free speech for those sidewalk counselors who peacefully express their First Amendment rights. Engel said no other healthcare facility is asking for a buffer zone and which means “without a shadow of a doubt that [metro council] is writing this ordinance for a private for profit business” that does most of Kentucky’s abortions.
