Suicide is the second leading cause of death for young Kentuckians. In response to this major public health crisis, Gov. Beshear announced Kentucky will join other states in launching a simple three-digit suicide and mental health lifeline: 988. Beshear said, “Counselors respond to calls, chats or text messages directly from those who are in need, as well as Kentuckians who are concerned about a loved one or a friend who may need help.” It’s ironic that the teen suicide rate in the U.S. is so high, despite the wealth and modern conveniences. This tells us that material goods cannot address the deepest longings of the human heart. They cannot provide true comfort, purpose, or the deeper longings of the human heart—only God can do that. We’re thankful that Gov. Beshear joined this initiative to help address this devastating crisis.
