Kentucky children are unfortunately first in the nation when it comes to having a parent in jail. This is one of the findings recently released in the 2016 Kentucky KIDS COUNT data book. Kentucky Youth Advocates compiled the report and one of the biggest if not overlooked findings regards family structure. The report found that nearly one of every three children live in single parent homes. This a huge disadvantage and one of the pivotal indicators of whether children will live in poverty or succeed in school. Kentucky Youth Advocates is doing laudable work and the legislature will certainly consider what can be done to ensure that children in Kentucky become successful—one of the biggest things that can be done is to enact policies that encourage marriage and strengthen families
