Kentucky House Republicans recently proposed a $124.8 billion budget to fund Kentucky for the next two years. The budget includes more funding for public schools, infrastructure, substance abuse prevention, and many other projects. State Rep. Jason Petrie, who led the budget process, described it as a reasonable alternative to earlier budgets which prioritized political rewards and punishments over sound decision making. He said, “For far too long our state budget was guided by what was politically beneficial…We know that a robust, fiscally conservative budget is imperative to ensure long-term economic stability and prosperity for the people of Kentucky.” Despite controlling both the state House and Senate by supermajorities, Kentucky Republicans have fortunately put the common good above political payback.
