The Kentucky Chamber of Commerce used to be known as a conservative organization that promotes businesses, economic development, and free-market policies. But their 2022 legislative priorities undermine the conservatism it was once known for. The Chamber is calling for expanded gambling “to better compete with surrounding states.” Specifically, they want to expand betting on sports. Yet gambling by its nature undermines a strong work ethic, thrift, and delayed gratification. The Chamber is also “oppos[ing] Discriminatory Legislation in the Name of Religious Freedom.” Translation: the Chamber is embracing LGBT rights above our First Amendment freedom of religion. And this will be a tough sell to the many conservative business owners who guide their enterprises according to their moral convictions.
