Kentucky passed Amendment 1, which says that in order to vote in Kentucky elections, you must be a U.S. citizen. Seven other states passed similar laws. Amendment 1 was approved by two-thirds of Kentuckians who voted for it. It was a common sense law, which begs the question: why were liberals so opposed to measures to protect our elections? The voters and the state legislators thought that these were reasonable requirements for voting, but some Democrats claimed that it is racist and discriminatory to require proof of citizenship. Most voters see that voter integrity laws benefit everyone across the political spectrum. And so long as Democratic candidates refuse to strengthen such laws, they will likely suffer at the polls.
