The troubled Jefferson County Public School district dealt with a bussing fiasco, low test scores, and classroom discipline issues. Now its facing parents who feel shut out from a school board meeting open to the community. But the venue was too small, and many frustrated parents were turned away. Attorney Amye Bensenhaver said that this might have violated Kentucky statues which require that open meetings be held in an appropriate setting. She said, “The impression that they’re giving is almost that they want to defy the law.” The district has also held meetings with individual board members, another potential violation of the law. Critics contend that the state’s largest school system has developed a habit of secrecy and if they want to win the trust of parents, that needs to change.
