Kentucky’s state budget includes a provision that requires public school test scores to be posted on each school district’s website. The idea is to let parents know how well their child’s school is performing. But State Rep. Tina Bojanowski (D-Louisville), criticized the idea. She said, “My first thought is like you had to have a scarlet letter for adultery. This is like scarlet letter on schools because they educat[e] students in poverty.” Bojanowski is also a teacher and said that publicly posting such test scores overlook other ways of measuring academic performance. Of course, test scores aren’t the only sign of a good school, but they’re an important sign. And every parent in the Commonwealth should have easy access to this information as Republicans in the state legislature are proposing.
