What was supposed to be a day of celebrating our nation’s independence turned into a day of mourning in Chicago. At the July 4th parade in Highland Park, seven people were shot dead and many others were injured by a gunman. Unsurprisingly, Illinois’ Democratic Governor JB Pritzker called for stricter gun laws. Pritzker said, “I don’t think a single one of [the Founders] would have said ‘you have a constitutional right to an assault weapon.’” It seems he has forgotten that Illinois has some of the strictest gun laws in the country, including their Red Flag law that failed to stop the gunman. Short of an outright gun ban, more restrictions would likely have minimal impact. There are some issues that are outside the reach of the government. Taming the human heart is one of them.
