Could you imagine a law forcing a Jewish deli owner to tell his customers about the benefits of eating pork and then referring them to a non kosher butcher? Sounds ridiculous but a new law in Illinois does something even worse. It forces doctors, nurses and other medical professionals with pro-life convictions to become abortion advocates.. and requires them to refer patients to centers like Planned Parenthood. It even requires explicitly pro-life organizations like pregnancy care centers to refer for abortions. This is not something you wouldn't expect in a nation that values freedoms of association and conscience—both protected by the First Amendment. The truth is, government cannot compel or stifle speech, and this is precisely what the law does. We should be vigilant here in Kentucky, because in this moral climate, even legislation once unthinkable, is possible.
