According to the U.S. State Department’s 2019 National Human Trafficking report, there are a staggering 24.9 million people trafficked in the world. Most cases involve women, often underage girls who are runaways and trafficked for sex. It’s disturbing to think of man’s inhumanity toward his fellow man. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said “we must band together and build momentum to defeat human trafficking. We must hold the perpetrators of this heinous crime accountable. We must achieve justice for survivors as they rebuild their lives.” Pompeo’s commitment is heartening yet this isn’t an issue that’s just in other parts of the world. It’s right here in Kentucky. The Kentucky Derby is a magnet for traffickers. And this forces each of us to stand in the gap for the vulnerable.
