Commonwealth Policy Center

I’ve been on the phone with pastors across the state recently and a common concern I’m hearing is Gov. Beshear’s tone toward the church hasn’t been very positive. This comes from multiple phone conversations I’ve had with pastors from different denominations. The governor regularly points out the church in Hopkins County that held revival services where COVID-19 was eventually spread. What he fails to mention is that the church’s revival service was March 15. This is before restaurants and bars were ordered to be closed by the governor. It was also before the Center for Disease Control recommended groups of 10 or more not gather. The church is an essential member of our communities and nearly every church in the Commonwealth is following social distancing guidelines by holding services online instead of meeting in person.
