The Republican Party revised its platform and dropped their official support for a national abortion ban. They also removed references to man/woman marriage. The GOP is clearly trying to broaden its coalition. This political move is supposed to placate radical abortion supporters who charge Republicans with being insensitive to women in difficult circumstances. But is this a valid excuse for abandoning a key moral issue? Social conservatives who support life and traditional marriage make up a significant part of the Republican base and they’re criticizing the change. For decades, the Republican Party has been the party which protects vulnerable human life and the family. Politics requires building broad coalitions to win, but it remains to be seen if there’s still room for social conservatives.
