College is back in session and unfortunately, so is continued hostility against conservative speakers. Last week conservative political scientist Charles Murray was unable to walk across Harvard Yard alone. He needed a police escort because of feared violence against him. Last year, he was assaulted at Middlesbury College because of his conservative beliefs.  This week, conservative commentator Ben Shapiro is scheduled to speak at Berkley but the campus is only allowing about half of the auditorium to be filled. This is on top of a controversial $16,000 security fee the sponsoring group had to pay. Colleges are supposed to support free speech and welcome intelligent and diverse speakers onto campus. But actions by University of California-Berkeley officials undermine this and the hostility by students and staff is an indication of how little they value free speech.
