In a free country, there are limits to what the government can do. The idea behind the United States is one of limited government in order for people to have freedom and opportunity. When the government begins to provide things that people can and should provide for themselves, it needs more money. And this means it will reach into your back pocket and my back pocket to provide for others. Some see this as charity–government doing good work: helping the homeless, the hungry, and the destitute. But when government does that, it removes the necessity of community members taking care of and investing in the lives of their own fellow citizens. This provides a false sense that all is well, and in the end, we lose an opportunity to love our neighbors well and help them when they’re in need.
